rideshare auto insuranceFor California drivers, a great way of making extra cash is by using your own car to offer rides to people thru providers like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar.

Starting July 1, 2015 Uber, Lyft and Sidecar drivers must have a specific type of car insurance the second they turn on their app. Your current car insurance probably doesn’t cover you while you are ridesharing.

Below is a break down the different stages of being an Uber, Lyft or Sidecar driver and how this relates to ridesharing auto insurance.

Stage 1: You turn the app on and you are waiting to be matched with a passenger. This is known as the Waiting or Trolling stage.

Stage 2: You and a perspective passenger are matched and you are on your way to get them.

Stage 3: This is the time between picking up and dropping off the customer.

Companies like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar may have an insurance policy that covers you during Stages 2 & 3, BUT not cover you during Stage 1.

Let’s say there’s a big event in town and you want to take advantage of all the people that need a ride. You turn on your Uber, Lyft and/or Sidecar app and you are driving around (possibly in heavy traffic as the event just ended) waiting for the next ride and BOOM, you get in an accident. During this waiting/trolling stage, you need to be covered and your current auto insurance policy probably doesn’t cover you.

Why Are You Not Covered By Your Current Auto Insurance Policy?

The reason you are most likely not covered by your current auto insurance policy during Stages 1-3 is because you are technically using your car for business or money making purposes. If your current auto policy is a PERSONAL auto insurance policy, not a COMMERCIAL or BUSINESS insurance policy, you are most likely not covered while ridesharing. The usage of your car can determine if a claim is covered or not.

Einhorn Insurance offers Uber, Lyft and Sidecar drivers a California auto insurance policy that covers them once they turn the app on and they are waiting or trolling (Stage 1). This policy will replace your existing car insurance policy and cover you just as your normal car insurance policy would when you are using your car personally (not ridesharing).  You do not need to buy a 2nd car insurance policy.

If you are one of the 70,000 drivers in California taking advantage of making extra cash thru Uber, Lyft and/or Sidecar, you will need to have the proper car insurance.

Play it safe…we love that folks are taking advantage of cool apps such as Uber, Lyft and Sidecar. Einhorn Insurance just wants to make sure you have the right California car insurance while ridesharing.
