Happy New Year and with the dawning of 2014 comes new driving laws in California.
Here are a few we think you should know about:
USE OF CELL PHONES AND MOBILE DEVICES
If you are under 18 years old, you are no longer allowed to use any type of mobile electronic communication apparatus while behind a wheel. Yes, this even pertains if you are “hands free.” The only exception to this law is if you are calling the police or any other emergency service provider.
BROKEN PARKING METERS
Ever park in a spot, put change in the meter and nothing happens because the meter is broken? We’ve all wondered, “can I still park here?” The answer is YES, but you can only park there for the posted time limit. So, if it’s a 2 hour meter, the max time you can park in that spot is 2 hours before you get a ticket.
PASSING PEOPLE ON BICYCLES
Yes, cyclists often have their own bike lanes, but the “Three Feet for Safety Act” requires drivers to allow AT LEAST 3 feet between the car and the bike when passing. If there is a lot of traffic or the road doesn’t allow for a 3 foot distance, drivers must slow down to a reasonable speed and only pass the biker when it is not a danger to the person on the bike.
If you do not follow this law, fees start at $35 and can go higher than $150 when court and other fees are added.
WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2015
DRIVER’S LICENSES
Effective Jan 2015, The DMV must offer driver’s licenses to people who are ineligible for a SS# as long as this person can show other documentation confirming their identity and established residence. This license can’t be used at the airport security or for any other federal identification.
