Socialize your Pit Bull as early as possible.

Dog-to-dog aggression can be an issue with Pit Bulls.  Socializing any breed of dog is very important at an early age.  The great thing about adopting a Pit Bull is the rescue or shelter you adopt from can tell you how the dog behaves with other dogs. Who Shouldn’t Adopt or Have A Pit Bull

If you are looking for a Pit Bull as a guard dog, this is not the breed for you.  Pit Bulls hate fighting and they are NOT meant to be outdoor dogs.  They have very short hair and get cold easily.  Additionally, if you are planning to keep a dog on a chain or want to use a Pit Bull for fighting, you should not adopt a dog at all.  A chained dog is an unhappy dog and will act out due to being so angry.  It’s illegal to keep a dog on a chain and it’s illegal to fight dogs.  Finally, if you are planning on breeding your Pit Bull, PLEASE DON’T!  You may think it will be “fun to have a litter,” but you never know where these puppies end up.  Often times once a Pit Bull starts to get older, the nostalgia of the cute little puppy wears off and these dogs are dumped at shelters and will often be euthanized within a week.

Adopting a Pit Bull, or any other type of dog, is an ongoing responsibility.  A dog is very different than a cat, fish or reptile.  Dogs require more attention and you have to be prepared for the additional time commitment.

Like many other dog lovers, Einhorn Insurance thinks Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) is BS!

BSL is known as a dangerous dog law which says that a dog is “dangerous” because of its breed.  While other breeds such as Labradors, Beagles and Cocker Spaniels (not impacted by BSL) have to bite someone/something or cause harm to be labeled as Dangerous or Vicious, dogs affected by BSL are given these labels solely because of their breed.

With BSL, a dog doesn’t have to bite, doesn’t have to show aggression, doesn’t have to hurt another animal…… they are considered dangerous just because they were born a Pit Bull. 

How can a world that is so technologically advanced and “civilized” be so dumb to assume all dogs of a certain breed will cause harm, bodily injury or danger?  It’s like saying all people from California surf or all people from New York like cheesecake or everyone that lives in Alaska is an Eskimo.  BSL is complete stereotyping and discrimination!  Can people really be this stupid?

The answer is unfortunately, YES.

Please let us know if you live in or know of a State or City that has Pit Bull Bans or BSL.  The more common dog breeds that are affected by BSL are Pit Bulls, Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terriers, Rottweilers, German Shepherds, Akitas, Chows, Dobermans, Huskies and Wolf Hybrids. 

I’d like to think that we are not this stupid and the act of BSL came with good intentions as its goal was to keep irresponsible dog owners from fighting, breeding, mistreating and neglecting certain breeds.  Unfortunately, this backfired and BSL now hurts all of us, especially the responsible dog lovers.

When a breed is given a title of “dangerous,” it puts all the blame on the dog.  The dog’s behavior lies mainly on the owner and environment, not the type of dog.  Einhorn Insurance knows as well as you do, the dog’s breed has little to do with aggressiveness.  There are many other variables that cause a dog (OF ANY BREED) to be dangerous: a negligent owner, an owner that inflicts pain on their dog, a dog that is chained, a dog that is food deprived, a horrible environment, lack of socialization, not spaying/neutering your dog and the list goes on and on. 

BSL causes honest, good, responsible, loving and law abiding owners to lose the potential of owning a blacklisted breed, or even worse, having to give up a family member that has been loyal to them for years. 

There are so many other (and less costly) solutions to promote responsible dog ownership:

1.  Enforce Leash Laws:  We have a neighbor that lets their Lab run all over the neighborhood, chase cats and crap on everyone’s lawn.  If this was my Pit Bull, we’d have hate mail or Animal Control knocking on our door.  Many dog attacks occur with loose and roaming dogs (especially if they are unneutered males).
2. STOP CHAINING/TEATHERING DOGS:  A chained or tied up dog is an unhappy dog.  It is mean and inhumane to have a dog live like this.  Almost a quarter of dog attacks are by chained dogs.
3. Enforce Breeding Laws: Over 1 Million Pit Bulls are put down yearly due to overpopulation, back yard breeders and puppy mills that produce mass quantities of puppies.  Those breeding in this manner only care about money and not the welfare of the dog.  Many don’t care where the dogs end up so long as they can make a few bucks.
4. Offer more Free or Low Cost Spay & Neuter Opportunities.  A majority of dog claims are with unneutered males.  By spaying your female dog, you won’t have an accidental litter.

As proud Pit Bull parents, we understand how it feels to have people stereotype us and our Pit Bull Bernice.  We’ve had people cross the street when they see us coming, ask if  she makes a good fighter and warn us that one day, “she’ll just snap.”  I used to get angry and take offense, but now I try to educate people about Pit Bulls and the loving people who own them. 

Getting mad and angry just validates the poor images people have of owners of these wonderful breeds.  We need to focus on education to overcome such ignorance and hopefully eliminate BSL in the near future!

On Thanksgiving Day, I got a speeding ticket.  I felt as if I was going with the flow of traffic, but Mr. Police said otherwise.   He asked if I knew how fast I was going and I said, “maybe 80”?  He said 87-88 and that I had passed 14 cars in the last 1 ½ miles. 

Yikes, what’s my next move?  I was certainly guilty of going over the 65 mph speed limit.   Why try to finagle anything?  I’m sure Mr. Police hears all kinds of sob stories from the people they pull over.  Instead of telling him the truth (that I was running late to pick up a family member for Thanksgiving) and hoping I would succeed with the sympathy card, I asked him if he would write the ticket for under 85 mph.  I had an inkling that a speeding ticket under 85 (which is less than 20 miles an hour over the 65 speed limit) would result in a lower fine.  He was kind enough to do this. 

SHOULD I GO TO TRAFFIC SCHOOL?

As long as you haven’t been to traffic school in the last 18 months and your moving violation is not a Major Violation (DUI, DWI, suspended license, etc.), you are eligible for traffic school.

I was eligible for traffic school and would do everything in my power to avoid a point on my driving record.  I have no time for increased auto insurance rates when it’s something I can control.  A point stays on your record for 3 years causing auto insurance rates to increase for the next 3 years.    

By taking traffic school, you erase the 1 point so it will never show up on your driving record.  This is a big deal because if you have one point and then get another point (as a result of another ticket or an “at fault” accident), you lose the “good driver” discount on your next auto insurance renewal.  This “good driver” discount is no joke…20% off your auto rates.  It was not worth messing around for me!

On the back of my yellow ticket (that was written in pencil so lightly that it could barely be read), it said my court date was 2 months from the day I was pulled over.  Why the police are still using triplicate forms (it may have been parchment paper) and not the sophisticated electronic hand devices the parking police use is beyond me.   Perhaps that is a topic for later…. 

My Experience At Traffic Court

I waited and waited to get something about my ticket in the mail.  It never arrived.  So, on the morning of my court date, I showed up to traffic court at 8am with the thought that I’ll be the early bird.  It turns out Court opens at 7:30am and after going through the airport security measures (emptying pockets onto the conveyor belt and walking through the metal detector), I figured out I had to get in the back of a long line (about 40 people deep).  Did I mention it was 8am on a Monday morning?  I talked a little sports (it had just been released that Kobe was giving up ½ of his assets to his wife in the divorce) with my fellow traffic violators and finally reached the gatekeeper to tell me what to do next. 

This person either wasn’t having a good day or didn’t like my show.  Either way, it was not a pleasant conversation.  I explained why I was there and that I had no idea what to do next.  She said you can go in this line and pay your fine or you go into the courtroom and wait for the judge. 

At this point, I received ZERO mail about this violation and still didn’t know the fine amount.  I asked this person if I was supposed to get some information about the ticket in the mail…she sort of shrugged with a non-answer.   Finally, she told me it was $290 for the ticket + the DMV fee for traffic school. 

I thought about going to see the judge and asking the judge to lower my fine because of my stellar driving record. I haven’t had a ticket in over 12 years.  Going into the courtroom is a roll of the dice.  First of all, you have no idea when you will be called…it could take 5 minutes or hours.  Secondly, the judge may not be willing to lower the fine.  I decided my time was worth more than a day waiting in court and I decided to pay the $290.  I was directed to another line with all the other thrilled payers (stoked to be stimulating our city’s economy). 

Finally, I reached the front of the line, paid with a credit card, was handed a list of the traffic school options and walked out.  I now have 2 months to take traffic school and mail the certificate to the DMV to erase my point.  Oh, and by the way, you have to pay a separate fee to the traffic school.

I was glad my Traffic Court experience was over.  Now, the traffic school class was hanging over my head.  The next day I checked the mail at my house.   Big shocker…guess what arrived?  Only the mailed information about my traffic ticket/court that I had been waiting for the last 2 months!  Here’s the kicker….  I open it up and on the top right of the document it says in bold letters Bring this Courtesy Notice with you to court.  Great idea!  Why didn’t I think of that?  It’s like learning that you won an all-expense paid trip to Australia with one condition…you have to show up with a special document (that was being mailed to you) on 2/3/12 or the deal is off.  The document arrives on 2/4/12 and now all you can do is toss back a Fosters and watch Dundee on the boob tube.

Had I received this mailer 2 days earlier, I would have known my options.  I wouldn’t have wasted my time at court.  I could have paid the fine on-line and booked my traffic school.

Booster Seat Law Effective 1/1/12

If you have children, make sure to pay attention to the new booster seat law.  It requires all children under 8 years old (or less than 4’9” tall) to be restrained in a booster seat in the backseat of the vehicle.  The law used to require children under 6 years old (or less than 60 pounds) to be in a booster seat. 

Sobriety Checkpoint & DUI Violation Effective 1/1/12

If you don’t have a valid drivers license and are at a sobriety checkpoint, the police are not allowed to impound a vehicle. 

If a person is convicted of an alcohol-related violation aka “wet reckless”, they can apply for a restricted license early if meeting all the conditions required (i.e. installing an ignition-interlock system).

New Vehicle Purchase Effective 7/1/12

If you buy a new car, the dealer must register the vehicle electronically with the DMV.  The dealer can charge $80 for the electronic filing or $65 to process it manually.

A vehicle’s license fee (VLF) is calculated as a percentage of the value of the vehicle.  The registration fee increased from $31 to $43 on 7/1; this amount is added to the VLF.  These extra funds will raise money to pay for DMV operations.
